At the start of each school year, the Gilbert Kiwanis Club in conjunction with its partner, Dollar Days, puts together backpacks for the Title 1 schools in the Gilbert Public Schools. The number of backpacks can vary from year to year but generally they donate about 400 backpacks each year. This year (August 2021) they were able to donate 408 backpacks to 15 elementary schools in Gilbert.
They want to give a special thanks this year to Mike Stringer and his Dollar Days employees for putting together the backpacks. The Club appreciated all the extra help to make this happen. One of the goals of the Gilbert Kiwanis Club is to help make an impact on the lives of children in the Gilbert School District who may not otherwise be able to afford the basic necessities for school. The Principals and the Social Workers at all these schools were extremely appreciative to have the assistance of the Gilbert Kiwanis Club.
Brad Paes, the principal of Burk Elementary, told the Club that the backpacks were flying out of his school. Due to Houston Elementary closing, Burk almost doubled their attendance, so the backpacks were badly needed.
The Gilbert Kiwanis Club has a longstanding record of supporting schools in the Gilbert School District through various programs and working to help our community thrive. Each year, in addition to the backpacks, the Gilbert Kiwanis Club sponsors Student of the Month programs at various schools as well as Holiday Family Gift cards, which are given to needy families at the Title 1 schools around Christmastime. Their ability to partner with local businesses to provide additional support during these unprecedented times only further highlights their commitment to service and the betterment of our community.
